Moving Demo
Tuesday 7th September
Monday had been a full on induction day, so Tuesday was my first day properly learning about the course. My first learning experience was a technical viewpoint of the course. I learnt the difference between a passive and an active audience. This was very useful, it allowed me to see how I need to change my viewpoint on film in order to succeed in this course. This basic lesson showed me I need to learn how to deconstruct media, recognise the denotation of things and analyse it deeper.
Wednesday 8th September
On this day we learned basics of structuring a story. We were given pictures and had to make a story out of it. Looking back this was really the start of learning about proposals and presenting a pitch. This exercise also introduced me to new people within my class, working together on a project allowed conversation to flow easier and so working with someone I didn’t know, became easier. Presenting the pitch in front of the class also allowed me to see that the people in my class weren’t scary and that everyone here wants to work towards the same goal as me.
Thursday 9th September
This day introduced me to basic camera shots, learning all the basics such as extreme wides, mid shots, close ups and more. But the best part of this day was getting hands on with the camera. Being allowed to go out and actually practice what I learned was really useful to me. I believe it helped me greatly to actually get hands on with the equipment. Once again we worked with people from our class and so I got to learn more about new people.
We were also set “The Journey” task on this day. This allowed me to start working on ideas over the weekend.

Friday 10th September
Today we learned the basics of Wix. I had previously used Wix for my summer work so I didn’t find today too hard. However, I did find today very useful as we learned more about what we would have to do in the future. This was useful as it was one of the things I am worried about.
Monday 13th September
Today introduced me to jump cuts. I was quite nervous when I was told we had to work in a three with people we had not previously worked with. At first I was hesitant but once I was in a group, I was comfortable with what we were doing and I felt I worked well with the two new people I now know well. To accomplish our jump cut we took one long shot where they would jump into one another and then swap their clothes and shoes with each collision.
I was also introduced to premier. One of my main concerns heading in to this course was editing. I had previously tried at home and had struggled quite badly. However, with the guidance of my lecturer, I really enjoyed learning the basics of editing. I felt comfortable trimming and cutting and I found constructing a final piece to feel quite rewarding. To make our final piece, we took the one long shot and cut out the bits where they swap shoes, jumpers and glasses. Then the clips left are put next to each other and gives the illusion it has swapped instantly.
Tuesday 14th September
On this day I learned about Pre-production, proposals and storyboards. Doing proposals reminded me of the pitches we had to do on Wednesday 8th. This made me feel more confident for doing them in the future as I already had experience with pitching a project.
Wednesday 15th September
We started to plan our “The Journey” Project today. I had planned a rough idea over the weekend and so I pitched my idea to the group. I feel this helped us with a basic idea, however our final project was completely different to my rough idea. But I enjoyed out team work. Once again it introduced me to new people I had not worked in a practical setting with before. I found the teamwork useful and learning what I have to do in pre-production, I believe will help me in future projects.

Thursday 16th September
Today was our first jump into the theory part of our course. At first I did find this section of the course not as engaging as the more practical sides, however I do recognise the importance of it. I found the lesson useful, however I’m still hesitant about doing it in the future. I think once I learn about it more, I will grow more confident with it.
In the second half of today we shot our “The Journey” project. This was useful as we made several mistakes which will help me learn for the future. At one point our camera’s battery ran out, so I had to run in for a new one. This wasted precious time as we only had a certain time limit to complete the shoot in. Our first location was also busy when we arrived,
So we had to work around it. Learning to adapt as well as making mistakes will help me to be better planned and more flexible in future projects.
Friday 17th September
On this day we edited our “The Journey” projects. I really enjoyed this. I used the skills I had previously learned on our Jump Cut projects. I feel this session really helped to solidify my grasp of the basics of Premiere. I was really happy with my final piece as well.
Monday 20th September
Today I was introduced to the weekly journal. Additionally, we were set the “self portrait” projects and I already am starting to have ideas. I am really looking forward to going through the process of creating it. Finally, we looked at some of the basics of sound equipment and I’m looking forward to continuing that.
Wednesday 22nd September
I missed Tuesday’s lesson due to a dentist appointment so when coming in on the Wednesday I knew I had to catch up. On the day I missed they had recorded stock sounds and today we created soundscapes. I learned the basics of Adobe Audition and I’m confident I can now effectively use it in the future.
I have also progressed in my “self portrait” project. I have now created my base story and drawn some rough storyboards. I plan to get the proper storyboards done by the weekend.
Thursday 23rd September
In the first half of today we continued with project 4. I now understand, Steve Neale, hybrid genres and Christian Metz. Based off the work today, I’m planning on talking about Neale and Metz in my final essay.
In the second half we continued planning our “self portrait”. I’ve now completed my proposal and started my official storyboards. On top of that I have done my mood board and mind map which will help me with finalising my official storyboards.
Friday 24th September
Today I learned details of a DSLR camera. I have previous experience as I did GCSE photography so I didn’t find it too hard. But I’m sure aperture, ISO and white balance will be useful for the future. Once we’d looked at the basics we were set a task where we had to take pictures of lots of circles. To make editing easier later we tried to keep the circles roughly all the same size in the viewfinder when taking the videos of them. We also made sure to do a white balance and adjusting ISO and aperture on each shot to make sure they look good.
I’ve finished my official storyboards now and they will help me greatly when filming my final piece. Additionally I’ve completed my production schedule which means when I actually film, the filming should be able to run a lot smoother.
Monday 27th September
Today we edited our videos of circles together. This introduced me to more complex parts of premiere, this time being keyframes. I didn’t struggle to much and I’m confident I can use keyframes to great effect in the future. I mainly used opacity keyframes to help transition between each of the circles. However, I also experimented a bit with scale and positioning to make sure the circles were all the same size and layered on top of each other well.
We also learned more about location and risk assessments which will help me properly complete them for my upcoming “self portrait” project.
Tuesday 28th September
Today we continued working on our Self Portrait project. I completed my risk assessment and now all I have to do is my location assessment before I can move onto production. I feel confident moving onto production and believe I should be successful.
Wednesday 29th September
We created a short film today based off a word. My groups work was Fear. I feel confident in the shots we have taken and I’m looking forward to editing it tomorrow.
I also went down and scouted my location today. I was happy to see it was just as suitable as I believed and it was also public property just as I thought. The outing was successful and I have now been able to successfully complete my location assessment.
Thursday 30th September
I’ve done quite a lot today. On my self portrait I’ve made my mask props that are a central part to my film. I’ve also now finished all my pre-production work and I’m ready for filming this weekend.
In lesson I edited my “the word” project which was Fear. I’m extremely happy with how my editing went and I’m really proud of the finished product. I used my previous work, especially with keyframes to achieve what I wanted.
