Initial Ideas Summary

Summary

(Unit 07 LO1 2.1)

I was initially very hesitant about this project as I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go in. However, after the research into WIX and the context and theory looking at other websites, I’ve discovered things about my own website that I would want to change and improve. 

 

One of the main things I would like to change about my WIX is how I structure my pages. I’ve realised that because I spread the information across most of the page, when the website is viewed upon different sized screens, sometimes not all the content is visible, or easily accessible. This is something I definitely want and need to fix. The easy way to fix this would be to use the gridlines that WIX offers, however I think that using these would then impact the look and aesthetic that I’ve built my website around so far. When I continue Ideas Development and pre-production, this is something I will look at working to fix.

 

Another thing I would want to improve is my navigational systems. I’m very happy with how they work and the usefulness they provide at the moment. However, I feel they rely too heavily on functionality and don’t provide enough form to create balance between the two. Creating a new design that looks better but still has the same functionality would be the best way to fix this problem. I do not want to change the base idea too much as form should follow functionality and not the other way around.

 

Continuing on from the last idea, I think just generally improving the form and design of my website as a whole would be an important way to improve it. Just as said before, I feel I rely too heavily on function and making sure my work is fully completed and in great detail on my WIX website. Now, I would not want to change that, as that is an important work ethic to have. However, backing up my work with a more professional or a better looking aesthetic to the website would be the best way to improve my website as a whole.

Finally, after I finished my mind map I made my first mood board which was on functionality. I used my previous experience from making mood boards for projects so this one was relatively similar. It’s good to get one of them done tonight as they all need to be completed by Thursday. I plan to get the rest completed over the next two days.

Wednesday 15th December

I started on project 2 and completed the rest of my 3 mood boards. These are good to get done tonight as I am helping my teammate shoot tomorrow so I will not have any time in lesson to get these completed. I’m satisfied with the work I put into them and I trust they will help me in the rest of the project. Once I completed them I then uploaded all of the idea’s development section onto my WIX website, this means my WIX website is now up to date with all my work.

The Purpose 

The true purpose of my WIX website is to advertise myself as a growing practitioner. The function of my planned interactive experience is to develop and improve my website so that it promotes my work more effectively. By the end of the production, I aim to have my website to a point where the form is improved, thereby pushing the function even more, improving both the look of my website as well as making my work stand out more. This would thereby improve the experience for my target audience, as when they come to see my work, the website itself will impress them, making the work seem even better. This idea will bring lots of good opportunities, as an improved site will help better market my work, thus increasing my potential as a practitioner. Improving my website will help better show off my strengths. This idea will work well as my portfolio is what everyone will see when first finding out about me. Presenting them with a well made and highly functional website will improve people’s opinions on me as well as my work.


 

The Target Audience

My main target audience for my planned interactive experience will be the examiner. However, further on from them, using the interactive experience as a portfolio of work to show to potential jobs or universities is a possibility. This means my website must be able to target itself to a wide audience, people of many ages, genders and race. One thing that the majority of the target audience will have in common will be an interest in the subject of media, as that is what my whole interactive experience is about. Therefore, one of the most important aspects of the interactive experience will be its professionalism. In order to best show off myself, my interactive experience must be professional and show off my work to a high standard.

The Target Audience’s needs

My planned idea will improve the aspects of my website that will appeal to my target audience. Many of these aspects will make my website more professional and improve functionality for my target audience.

One way I will be improving the functionality of my website will be by adjusting the way my work is displayed on my pages. Currently, some of my work is outside the gridlines, meaning it is not all visible on every single computer screen. This is bad as if my target audience could not view my work, then their opinion of me would greatly decrease. By moving my work inside the gridlines, it will mean my work will always be ready to view, no matter how or where the audience is viewing it.

One way I will be improving the form of my website will be by improving the aesthetic of my website. This will include updated button design, a better colour palette and improved backgrounds. These changes will make the form of my website more visually appealing for my audience. By improving the look of my website, this will then subsequently improve the audience’s opinion of my work. If the website as a whole seems interesting, the work especially will seem interesting. This means my audience will not get bored while viewing my work.


 

The Functionality, Interactivity, and content considerations of your interactive experience

My interactive experience will use mainly different pages, incorporating main and subpages as the best way to best display my content. Each project will have a main page which will act as a gateway to all the subpages. These subpages will then be dedicated to specific pieces of the work in each project. The main pages will make use of a button system as the means of transport to the subpages. This will be the easiest way for the audience to navigate the website as the majority of them will be used to this form of navigation. This will also keep the audience engaged as they will be interacting with the website. 

On each subpage, buttons as well as anchor menus will be taken advantage of. Buttons will be used for navigation for important information, such as going back, or to the main subheadings e.g. pre-production. The anchor menus will then be used for each piece of work, taking the audience to things such as mood boards or production schedules. This helps to cater for all the audience’s needs as well as keeping them engaged. All they will have to do to find what they’re looking for will be to go to the top of the page, where the anchor menus will act as guidemaps. They will then interact with the website to go to where they want. 

Finally, all the work such as images or documents will contain a small bit of interaction. All images will be able to be clicked to open them in a pop up. This will also cater to any audience’s who need to see the work in more detail. 


 

Design Considerations

Currently, I feel my website doesn’t accurately reflect form follows function. Instead, I feel as though there isn’t enough form to correctly support the function. So design considerations are very important. As stated, much of the work will be transferred to fit into the guidelines of WIX which will improve the website across all computer screens. This will improve the alignment and proximity of the website, especially on smaller computer screens. 

Also, I will continue the use of repetition and contrast in my headings, where the design of each heading is repeated, but the colours are different to set each page apart.

The home page will also have an extreme change, making it more professional to match the pages of work. Currently, the design is nice but does not match with the rest of my website. It will be adapted to the new colour scheme as well as becoming more professional looking. The Journal page will also be updated heavily, with different pages being assigned for each month, allowing the reading of the journal to become a lot easier.

My buttons and drop down menu will all be updated, as well as new pages such as an about me and portfolio page being added to improve the overall website.

All these changes and many more will help my website better fit with form follows function, as the design of the interactive experience will finally be able to match with the function and work that is presented on it.

Thursday 6th January

We started today with project 2. Danny talked us through the pre-production section. Prioritising the proposal and navigation flow chart. Once he'd talked to us, he set us off to do our own work. I started my proposal and wrote about 3/4 of it before the lesson finished.

In the second half of today, I started and completed my Harvard referencing for project 4. This is good to get out of the way now and will allow me to continue with getting and adding the images to the essay. Since I had more time, I finished the proposal for part 2. This will allow me to look at the navigational flow chart over the next couple of days.

Monday 10th January

When I got home I did more work on project 2. I’ve now created a rough version of my navigation flow chart, I plan to get Danny to look at it on Thursday, to see if I’ve done everything I need for it.

Finally, I planned the different things I needed to design for the rest of project 2. I’ve now got all the things I need to design planned out and I hope to start designing them in the coming days.

Tuesday 11th January

Then I went to work on some of my designs for project 2. I pretty much finished my design for a logo. I plan to do some more of this work in tomorrow’s lesson, now that I’ve finished my music video edit.

Wednesday 12th January

When I got home I continued further work on my project 2. I planned out the designs that I need to create. I plan to have all of them designed by the end of the weekend. Today, I designed to button that will take the user to the top of the page as well as the rough design for the About page. Once I’ve finished all these designs I’ll be able to move onto the full page mock ups. I’m struggling to think of all the things I need to design, but I’m hoping we get a bit more guidance in the lesson tomorrow.

I plan to get my Navigation flow chart checked over tomorrow, to double check that what I’ve done is correct.

I’ve done a lot of work on my project 2 today. With all the work I’ve done at home and at college today, I have now finished my designs for project 2. This includes the buttons, rough homepage, about me page, journal page, top button and logo. Additionally, in lesson I actually created a new logo for project 2. I liked my first design, but I felt it was too complex and hard to read. Now that I’ve created my new logo, I also plan to create a small gif to go along with it, that will also be inputted on my WIX website.

I also added more detail to my Navigation flow chart, added the about me and a portfolio page. Additionally, adding in Journal months and splitting my project into the two different years.

Friday 7th January

I then started looking at project 2. I reviewed the navigation flow chart again. I then made a brief plan of all the pages I currently have, and that I would have to add in the future of my WIX website. This is a good start for my navigation flow chart and will better prepare me for when I make the actual thing, which I would like to start doing in the coming days.

When I got home I did more work on project 2. I’ve now created a rough version of my navigation flow chart, I plan to get Danny to look at it on Thursday, to see if I’ve done everything I need for it.

Finally, I planned the different things I needed to design for the rest of project 2. I’ve now got all the things I need to design planned out and I hope to start designing them in the coming days.

On my Navigation flow chart, I've included all the pages that are currently on my WIX page, as well as all the other pages I believe I will need to add and then create content for as I go further into the course. I colour coded the pages that are on the same level, e.g. being main or sub pages. And the pages that can be navigated through using buttons or links are connected through colour coded lines.

Finally, I improved my project 2 Navigation flow chart. I added some more colour changes to make the levels of the flow chart fit in with one another. I also improved the layers on the photoshop so that further editing  will be easier to do.

Monday 17th January

Finally, once I got home today I did more work on my project 2. Today, I created my 3 page mock ups. I made them all today, which now means I’ve completed all my pre-production for project 2. However, I want to do some more detail onto my designs, so over the next couple days I plan to do some more work on this.

My 3 mock up pages are design for my home page, journal page and a production page. I chose these as my mock up pages as I feel they are the pages that need the most work on them. The Journal pages are entirely brand new and so a good design for them is crucial. My homepage needs updating and that’s a good place to show off my new logo and drop down menu. I redesigned the drop down menu as I felt the images no longer fit in especially with the homepage design. Instead I’ve given each section a colour which will be repeated when the menu drops down. Finally, the production page is designed as the layout of all my pages will change immensely as it now all needs to fit in the guidelines, this page also shows off the new button design.

Thursday 20th January

Finally, when I returned home I started some of my project 2 work. Today, I re-organised all the navigational pages so that they’re within the guidelines. As well as adapting all the demo work pages so that they now are adapted to the guidelines and new colour scheme.

Tomorrow, I plan doing more guideline and colour scheme work, as I feel it’d be best to improve all the stuff I already have on my WIX website before adding all the new pages.

Friday 21st January

When I returned home, I went back on doing Project 2 production. Today, I put more of my navigation pages into guidelines and updated their colour palette. These were the navigation panels for specific projects.

I also created my new home page, adding in the animated logo that I created the other day. This is really good to update as this is the first page anyone will see. I finished off with just adjusting some of my project 2 pages into the guidelines as well as updating their colour schemes.

Monday 24th January

I finished off today by doing some more of my production for project 2. I finished off converting my project 2 pages into the guidelines and the new colour palette, and then began doing the same for my Music Video pages. I’m hoping to have all the current work on my WIX page updated by this Thursday, which will then allow me to add all the new features in the following week. We have five weeks to do production, post production and bug testing, so I’m planning to have my production done in these first two weeks, to allow me ample time for the rest of the work.

When I got home, I did more work on project 2. Today, I finished off converting my music video pages into the guidelines as well as adapting the colour palette. This took quite a while as there was a lot of information on these pages, and adapting them into the guidelines took quite a lot of time and effort.

When I got home I did more work on project 2. In tomorrows lesson we will have the first half dedicated to this project. So, I spent today checking over the work I’ve already done. There were only a couple things that I needed to adjust such as slightly repositioning some texts to make sure it was properly in line with the vector art behind it. I’m now fully prepared to continue with all my work tomorrow. I should have all my pages re-aligned and coloured by tomorrow, but all the other buttons that I need to add should be done by Friday. This will allow me to add all the new informational pages over next week.

I thought we were going to have the first half of today to work on project 2 but instead we were given the whole lesson to edit the staging and blocking task from yesterday. It was good to get plenty of time for editing, but it was slightly annoying we couldn’t work on project 2.

Once I got home, I first made a demo work page for the staging and blocking task. I then continued with project 2 as we didn't do it at college. I re-organised and coloured my summer work page and then started doing the same to my Self Portrait page. When I finish my self portrait page tomorrow, I will have finished re-organising and colouring, This will leave only the buttons before I can start adding all the new content to my website.

When I got home I continued with project 2 work. Today I finished re-aligning and colouring my self portrait page, this means I have now completed re-aligning colouring all my previous pages, this means over the course of next week, I can implement my new buttons and start on adding and creating all my new pages.

To finish off the day I did some more of my project 2 production. Today, I started on changing my buttons. I was able to change all my buttons for each of my project pages, which only leaves changing my drop down menu and adding my top buttons before I can start on adding all my new pages.

Finally, I went back to project 2 and created all the new pages. Now that these are all on my website, I can start to flesh them out and input their information in the coming days.

I missed today’s lesson as I had a dentist appointment. But I had already let Nigel know yesterday, and he had informed me that all they would be doing in lesson is ideas development for options project, so I knew I could do the same work at home.

I began my work today with some project 2 production though. Today, I added all the buttons to the new pages that I created yesterday, onto their corresponding navigation pages. Obviously, there is nothing on these pages yet, but it will allow people to see what my upcoming projects will be. After that, I added the new top button to all my pages. This wasn’t too hard to do, but took quite a while as I had to add it to each individual page.

Then I moved onto more project 2 work. Today, I created my started on creating my new pages. Today I mainly worked on creating my portfolio page. This mainly incorporated, choosing some of my best work and presenting them on the same page, with some additional writing next to them, explaining a little about them. This took a little while, but I feel it’s definitely worth it, as any potential employers or anyone else will be able to instantly go on this page when they want to see examples of my work.

Then finally, I continued with my production for project 2. Today, I started on creating my Journal pages. Today I started and completed the page for September 2021. This took quite a while as importing all the text and images and then resizing and positioning them was quite a tedious and repetitive task. It wasn't too hard and I really did like the final look, but overall it took me quite a long time.

I then moved onto more project 2 work. I started with making my next journal page which was for October 2021. Similarly to the September one this was not too hard but did take quite a lot of time, especially as I had started writing more, as I grew better when writing my journal.

I finished off my work today with more project 2 work. Today, I made another journal page, today’s being for December 2021. This one wasn’t quite as hard as the others as due to the holidays in December the months journal was slightly shorter. Now I only have to do January and catch up with February so far and then I will have all my Journal pages up to date.

I finished off today with my last full journal page, this was for January 2022. This took pretty much the same time as the rest of the other ones did, but now it allows me tomorrow to finally move onto February so far which will finally mean that all my journal pages on WIX will be up to date. Ones the journal pages are complete, there are only a few more pages I need to complete before all my project 2 production is complete.

When I returned home, I finished off my journal work for project 2. This meant making the journal page for February 2022 so far as well as making the Journal Navigation page. This is really great to finish now as it only leaves my drop down menu and about me page to create before I’ve finished my production for project 2.

To finish off my day, I did a very short thing on my project 2. Updating my drop down menu for my WIX website. This now leaves only my about page and to finish off my bug testing before I have completed project 2. I am trying to do project 2 in my spare time between animating so hopefully I should have it completed before half term, which allows me time to double check everything before the deadline.

Monday 21st February

I was taking a break from animating today, so I looked at some of the other project work I needed to complete. I have already completed my essay for project 4 so I only had project 2 work that I needed to complete. I started with creating the last new component that I needed for my website which was the about page. However, as I was creating the page, it felt more and more as if the stuff I was writing about didn’t actually provide any useful information for my website. So after some debating I decided to change the about page into a contact page. This way there was still a useful addition to my website and the planning for the about page could instead be put into the contact page.
