Grip Kit

Monday 8th November

Finally, I did a grip track demo. We looked at the ride on dolly, crane and jib. I really liked the look of the jib and I would really like to use it in a project one day. I feel the jib could be used for the narrative part of our music video. I have already had several ideas for shots it could be used for. However the jib can only be used in school and I’m not entirely sure if there are any rooms that would provide the right backdrop for our narrative as the narrative needs to be set in a kitchen. However I’m going to look further into it as I would really like to use the jib.

Ride on Dolly

A ride on dolly will have the camera on, and operator on the seat. Pipes are set up on the ground and the dolly is set on top. There will also be a puller who will pull the dolly. A dolly is very useful for tracking shots, for example when a character walks towards the camera, using the dolly the camera can also move back.

Crane

A crane has the camera held on one end with counterweights on the other. This allows for the crane itself to be moved which then in turn moves the camera. Due to its heights cranes are often used for high up shots but can also be used for a shot where the camera raises from the floor to the ground. It's also useful as it allows a smooth shot.

Jib

A jib is a special kind of crane. It has a counterweight at the end which allows for full 360 movement. At the end it then has a special arm which the camera connects to. This arm can then be remotely controlled allowing for the camera itself to also have full 360 movement. This free movement makes it great for overhead or low to high moving shots.
